Ethan Salwen

Head Wrangler & Guide

Ethan first came to Ranquilco in 2013, and he just can't get enough of the place -- he loves the opportunity to live and work with horses and mules in what is basically a pre-industrial manner. Ethan has worked in both our guest program and our cattle operation, so he knows our land and animals well, and he has built deep friendships with many of the local gauchos. Ethan moves from one ranch to another, working on horseback in places like Montana, Wyoming, California, Nicaragua and New Zealand. A skilled horseman, packer, and guide, Ethan remains eager to improve his ranch horsemanship -- open-minded to anything that can help him better care for, partner with in work, and train equines in a way that makes them most useful for their jobs, as well as keeping them healthy. Ethan finds great satisfaction in working with guests -- from total beginners to other horse professionals, we've all got something to learn from each other. "I spend plenty of time working alone," says Ethan. "And I love that. But I also love working with our guests. People who make it all the way out here are my kind of people."
